Have you lost your creative freedom?

As a UX designer, I’ve sometimes had to compromise aspects of my work for short-term business needs and corporate politics. No matter how well I advocate for my ideas, they are ultimately subject to power structures beyond my control.

However, unless you’re being asked to do something illegal, you largely have to just do what you’re told. Unfortunately, if we all quit whenever we had to compromise to any extent, none of us would have clients or jobs — and good luck paying rent. Sometimes, you just need to pick your battles.

That being said, it can slowly chip away at one’s soul when your only source of income and creativity does not give you the autonomy you need for fulfillment. If this feeling continues un-checked, this can lead to resentment, depression and anxiety.

👇 Whenever these feelings come up for me, I’ve leaned on a few of the tools below to gain perspective 👇

Still asserting your point of view… even if people aren’t willing to listen, feeling psychologically safe enough to explain your point of view without retribution is crucial for personal development. If others aren’t even willing to give that, then get out of there. I am fortunate that I’ve had that space in my life, and it did wonders for my confidence — even if things didn’t go ‘my way.’

But have other ways to make money… teaching? Writing? Blogging? Having the financial ability to drop a draining client or job is the most liberated way to live. If one thing is your soul source of income, it is easier to attach too much of your identity to it.

And have hobbies… I go to life drawing and draw tattoos for friends. I have prints around my apartment. This doesn’t make any money — and I don’t care. I do the podcast and it helps people — that’s it. No one tells me what to do in these areas of my life — I have full control, authority and zero pressure. Some people need creative areas of their life like this, and I happen to be one of those people.

And knowing your values… which brings me to VALUES! While I love collaborating, and need creative constraints to do my best work, autonomy and trust are crucial for me when it comes to continually building my creative confidence. Working with people who help you best live your values (things will, sometimes go wrong though) is something I try to practice, because it has helped me in many areas of my life.

This week…

Ask yourself, “Do I have the creative autonomy I need?” If you do, what aspects of your work-life make you happy? If not, what do you need to change? Let’s continue the conversation on LinkedIn.
